Imen Siar, a 20-year-old from Croydon, entered the Britain’s Got Talent stage with an inspiring objective that went beyond the traditional goals of talent shows. Imen, who has worn a headscarf since she was eleven years old, said she sees her hijab as her crown and is inspired to encourage Muslim girls in her community and viewers. Her father, who had never taken her singing seriously previously, was not aware that she was performing that day, thus her audition carried a great deal of personal significance. For Imen, receiving four “yes” votes from the judges was not as significant as receiving a “yes” from her father and the entire crowd, which confirmed her decision to follow her dream of becoming a musician.
Imen gave an incredibly moving performance of Alessia Cara’s “Scars To Your Beautiful” for her song. Her voice had a distinct tone that instantly captured the attention of the audience and caused them to concentrate on each lyric. It was rich, velvety, and intensely expressive. On a worldwide scale, the song’s potent message of accepting oneself—”You don’t have to change, I think the world could change its heart”—perfectly mirrored Imen’s own path of self-acceptance and confidence. She presented the song with grace and a contagious joyful spirit, making it genuinely her own.
Her message and vocal skills really touched the judges. Alesha Dixon described the performance as “very special” and one that made her proud, praising her lovely voice and the humility she carried. Amanda Holden said that her performance was “perfect” and praised her upbeat and hopeful demeanor on stage. Simon Cowell said that he will remember her audition because of her “great energy” and modest manner. Imen received four unanimous “Yes” votes thanks to her captivating performance and distinctive voice, which gave her dream the ultimate legitimacy and, hopefully, the much-needed “yes” from her father.
