Claire, a 33-year-old mother from Liverpool, was clearly nervous when she entered the Britain’s Got Talent stage. Her 15-year-old daughter, Tia, was there to bolster her morale because she thought her mother was the one who was supposed to try out. But in a shocking turn of events, Claire disclosed that she was ceding her own place to her daughter. She sobbed as she described how Tia had supported her throughout “extremely difficult times” and that she felt she owed her. She also mentioned that Tia was “an incredible person” who was unaware of her true worth. Everyone was taken aback by the emotional sacrifice, and the judges graciously let Tia some time backstage to gather herself before she resumed her audition.
Still feeling overwhelmed, Tia managed to perform Jennifer Hudson’s empowering anthem, “I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” when she returned to the stage. Despite her hesitant entrance, the song she chose was really emotional, and her voice was amazing—powerful, controlled, and deeply soulful—from the time she started singing. The crowd and judges were immediately moved by her unadulterated emotion when she sang. Tia later disclosed that she picked the song, which has the line “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” because it helped her deal with the horrific bullying she had experienced due to the color of her skin. She considered her mother the strongest person she had ever known, and she dedicated the performance to her as well as to herself.
The bravery and skill displayed really affected the judges. They all commended Tia’s amazing talent and mentioned that she was singing from her heart. She “absolutely smashed it,” according to Bruno Tonioli, and she has a huge career ahead of her. Simon Cowell commended Claire for her altruistic deed, admitting that Tia would not have gone to the audition without her help. In addition, he praised Tia’s voice and reminded her that her mother had really prepared her for success. Tia received four unanimous “Yes” votes for the heartfelt audition, which was inspired by a mother’s sacrifice and a daughter’s strength.
