Richard Gere always looks great in his clothes.
His perfect suit and button-down shirt are easy to spot, whether he’s on the red carpet or on TV. During his 50-year reign, the silver fox has always worn the same stylish clothes.
The 75-year-old actor wears the same thing every day: a simple Tibetan prayer band.
Gere, a devoted Buddhist, told the magazine Lion’s Roar in 1999 that he learned about Buddhism for the first time in school, but that his “first encounter with Buddhist dharma” happened when he was twenty-one. He has been a Buddhist since then, which is why he wears his prayer beads, or mala band, on his wrist most of the time.
People wear mala bracelets to count mantras or prayers and to tell them of things throughout the day, just like any other religious sign. Beads can be made from metal, wood, seeds, jewels, or other materials, and each one has its own purpose. Sandalwood is the most popular style of material for bracelets.
Recently, Gere has been seen wearing his band on TV, especially on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on November 20, where he talked about his plans for this year’s Thanksgiving. He told the crowd that he and his family, including his Spanish-born wife Alejandra Silva, would be in their new home in Spain. He was named People’s 1999 Sexiest Man Alive.
“My wife is Spanish, and she raised me here for seven years,” says Gere. “So we’re going to spend some years with her family in Madrid.” “Our kids speak more than one language, so they’ll do well there.”
Gere and Silva met at a hotel in Positano, Italy, in 2014. They got married in May 2018. After that, they had two boys, Alexander, who is now five, and James, who is now four.
Silva, 41, has a son called Albert with her ex-husband Govind Friedland. He is 11 years old. Homer, Gere’s only child with his second wife Carey Lowell, was born in 2000.
