Cher claims Gregg Allman previously broke up with her in a note.
In her new book Cher: The Memoir, Part 1, which will be released on Tuesday, November 19, the “Believe” hitmaker, 78, discussed her marriage to the Allman Brothers Band singer—and how returning to work with her ex-husband Sonny Bono was difficult for him.
Cher discovered she was pregnant just before the new Sonny & Cher show premiered in 1976. When she informed Allman, he wasn’t convinced and refused to meet her when he returned to Los Angeles. According to the “I’ve Got You Babe” singer, he was furious that the media were “creating a juicy new love triangle” between the trio as a result of Cher and Bono’s new program.
Finally, the actress/musician discovered a message from the “Ramblin’ Man” performer that read: “I have two choices—go back to Macon and be heartbroken and lonely, or stay here and be made a fool of, the latter of which I just can’t do because I’m a man and a damn good one.”
He also admitted that he wished he could “live with being a fool.”
Cher and Allman, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 69, wed from 1975 to 1979.
Just days after Cher’s formal divorce from Bono, the pair tied the knot in 1975. Nine days later, Cher filed for divorce from Allman. They reconciled and remained married until 1979.
In a 2018 interview with the Daily Mail, the Moonstruck actress detailed how Allman’s substance misuse difficulties harmed their relationship.
“It was really intense, but it’s hard to have a marriage with someone who’s doing drugs,” she told me. “Drugs and I were just not intended to be together. I still believe it was foolish. I observed too many cases when it wrecked people’s lives.” It ruined Gregory’s life.”
Cher and Allman welcomed their first child, son Elijah Blue Allman, in 1976. They also worked together musically, releasing the duet album Two the Hard Way in 1977.
Cher announced in July the publication of her two-part book. The blurb promised that the first chapter will explore “her extraordinary beginnings through childhood to meeting and marrying Sonny Bono—and reveal the highly complicated relationship that made them world-famous but eventually drove them apart.”
Her memoir will also showcase her “trademark honesty and humor” and tell how a “diamond in the rough succeeded with no plan and little confidence to become the trailblazing superstar the world has been unable to ignore for more than half a century,” according to the summary.
Cher will launch a five-stop book tour on Wednesday, November 20, in New York City.
