Despite having only been in drag racing for four brief years, Jungle Pam’s name has been synonymous with the sport for almost forty years.

She was present when drag racing was at its peak and racers used their cars rather than computers to drive. Many say she was the first to introduce beauty into drag racing in a way that has never been matched.
Pam amazed us as much as the automobiles of that era when she backed up the famed Jungle Jim’s race car while wearing her trademark shorts and tank top.
It would be impossible to discuss Jungle Pam without bringing up her illustrious partner, “Jungle Jim” Liberman, a colorful drag racer.
Liberman, a well-known showman who began driving at the age of twelve, was a mainstay of the American drag racing scene. He is still regarded by many as the best showman the drag strip has ever had.
And the tale of Jungle Pam, real name Pamela Hardy, starts in May 1972, two weeks prior to her high school graduation.
As Liberman drove his yellow Corvette, he noticed the stunning young lady hitchhiking, and destiny intervened. Pam was excited to be attending West Chester University of Pennsylvania, with a business major. Rather, she fell in love with Jim and accompanied him on the trip right away.
She later remembered, “I drove my mother crazy by leaving the college where I had been accepted.”
With Jim’s charisma and Pam’s captivating personality, they became a formidable team in the drag racing industry while touring the nation together. Jim Liberman knew his humorous automobile would draw attention from the crowd, and he initially wanted Pam to set it up at the starting line.
“Well, Pam said to Competition Plus, sex sells.” You often see that on TV, but Jungle and I thought together that it would be worth trying this back in the ’70s, so that’s what we did, and it didn’t appear to damage his reputation in the slightest. And as long as I was standing next to his car, he had more photos taken of it than anyone else.
Pam was beautiful, but she was also always without a bra, usually in a small halter or tank top with zero-inch inseam jeans.
The most well-known person on the drag strip
She quickly went from being unknown to being the most well-known female drag performer. No woman has ever made it onto the cover of Hot Rod Magazine until her incredible journey to fame. The roars of acclaim for the most famous drivers were frequently eclipsed by the cheers that broke out when Pam took to the track.
In 1974, she said, “I’m kind of amazed by all the notoriety.”
But contrary to what some might have you think, Pam was more than simply a gorgeous face. She prepared the vehicle, checked for leaks in the fluid before each run, filled the block with eight quarts of 70W oil and water, packed parachutes for each race, and helped Jim realign his vehicle following burnouts.
“Pam remarked, “We put on a good show.” And it was the main focus of it all. It has nothing to do with me. It wasn’t about me when you were out there with us doing what we were doing. It was our concern.
Many were impressed that Jim had turned Pam into a true racing enthusiast, calling it “a stroke of genius.” This raised awareness of the sport in general and improved Jim Liberman’s team’s standing in particular.
Jim and Pam were unique in the somewhat specialized world of drag racing. Even though Jim won multiple national titles, he was best known for his vivacious nature, kind disposition, and, of course, his gorgeous girlfriend.
“Our connection was like a lightning bolt—it came and went quickly. “I simply worked,” Pam said to Fox Sports.
That all changed, however, on September 9, 1977.
Jim passes away
Jim was racing his 1972 yellow Corvette at 250 mph when he collided with a bus, three days shy of turning thirty-two.
Responders had to work for a sad forty-five minutes to remove the renowned drag racer’s body from the twisted wreckage after he passed away suddenly.
Pam told CompetitionPlusTV, “My mother called me to tell me because she didn’t want me to hear about it on the news.”
The whole motorsports community was shaken by the horrible catastrophe. Following the incident, Pam decided to give up drag racing and vowed never to collaborate with any driver.
Nevertheless, she made a discreet commitment to upholding Jim Liberman’s memory and often took part in memorial services for her deceased partner.
“His true personality was all that showmanship.” Simply said, he didn’t turn that on at the track and went back to being the same at home as everyone else. Even when we were just hanging around the house or went somewhere, he had that kind of flair. No matter where he was, you could always sense his presence,” adds Pam.
Pam moved on, romantically at least. Being a racing enthusiast, she eventually wed Fred Frey, the owner of a Funny Car. She wed Bill Hodgson, who tunes George Reidnauer’s Excalibur Corvette Nostalgia Funny Car, following their divorce.
