After spending sixteen years on the streets, Wanda Ritter hoped that one day someone would listen to her story and help ensure that justice was served.
With a suitcase full of cheques and documentation she had never cashed, she was standing in the street. When this woman claimed that the government owed her a significant sum of money—$100,000, to be exact—no one took her claims seriously. Most significantly, she was thought to be insane and no one took her story seriously.
Julie Turner, a social worker of 56 years, decided to take a closer look at all the files Wanda brought with her every day after hearing her plea one day. The fact that Wanda was being truthful startled her. Not as psychologically sick as most spectators assumed.
It was revealed that Wanda was receiving checks for anything from $300 to $900 each month, but she never cashed them since she felt something wasn’t quite right. She returned them instead of cashing them since she believed that would only lead to further issues.
Julie was determined to help Wanda get back on her feet and correct her condition. The two were able to navigate bureaucratic labyrinths and make the required adjustments by being persistent.
Wanda’s years of suffering injustice came to an end when she received her first Social Security check, which was worth $1,644.
This narrative is a poignant reminder to never give up on people because, in spite of all the apathy, there will always be people like Julie who are willing to listen, help, and make the world a better place.
