Barbra Streisand, who costarred with Kris Kristofferson in A Star Is Born, is paying tribute to the late actor and renowned country singer-songwriter. After learning of his quiet death on Saturday, September 28, at the age of 88 in his Maui home, Streisand, who was 82 years old at the time, turned to Instagram to honor her longtime friend and partner.
Streisand posted two heartfelt pictures: one from their performance at her British Summer Time concert in Hyde Park, London, in July 2019, and another from the 1976 movie A Star Is Born, in which they played Esther Hoffman and John Norman Howard. When Streisand thought back to their initial encounter at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, she saw Kristofferson as a special talent. She writes, “He seemed like the ideal choice for a script I was developing, which eventually became A Star Is Born, barefoot and strumming his guitar.”
She remembered their Oscar-winning song “Evergreen” duet with great affection, as well as their 2019 reunion on stage, where they sang another duet from the movie “Lost Inside of You.” Kristofferson’s timeless charm was lauded by Streisand, who said, “The audience showered him with overwhelming applause.” Seeing him get the appreciation and affection he so rightly deserved brought me joy.
She also posted her sympathies to Lisa Meyers, Kristofferson’s wife, in her poignant statement, recognizing her steadfast support of him throughout the years.
Celebrities from other fields showered Kristofferson with tributes after learning of his passing. His close friend Dolly Parton posted a heartfelt comment, referring to him as a “wonderful writer, actor, and friend.” LeAnn Rimes, Dakota Fanning, Melissa Etheridge, and Reba McEntire also shared their condolences for the loss of such a remarkable person.
In a statement, Kristofferson’s family expressed their appreciation for all of the love and support he got during his life. The lovely message they left behind was, “Whenever you see a rainbow, know that he is beaming down at each and every one of us.”
