My area had always been quiet, and whenever I wanted to build a fence, I had verbal agreements with my neighbors. When they relocated, things took a sharp turn, and I was left with a neighbor who was troublesome and eventually dealt with by karma.
My Maple Street home served as a haven for me, especially the backyard where I could unwind after a demanding day. I made the decision to install a fence for seclusion not long after moving in. Instead of employing a surveyor, Jim and Susan, my neighbors, and I came to an agreement to save money. After shaking hands and deciding on a location near the property border, I started constructing the fence. Jim and Susan were happy that there was no cost involved.
Jim and Susan sold their home a year ago, and Kayla, a realtor from the big city, took up residence. She stood out from the locals since she was constantly well-groomed and proud of her new house. After six months, a land surveyor delineated borders in the area. Kayla appeared on my house the following day, carrying a bundle of documents, to tell me that my fence had encroached on her land by nine inches. She insisted that I either pay for the land or relocate the fence.
She was unimpressed and insisted on obeying the regulations even after I gave her the explanation of the arrangement I had with the previous owners. She threatened to sue me if I didn’t follow her orders. I was forced to remove the fence, which was a difficult and depressing task, as I had no documentation of the prior arrangement.
Kayla came back a week later in a distressed state. She begged me to repair the fence, explaining that Duke, her dog, needed it to be safe. I declined to reconstruct it since I didn’t want to cause her any more harm. Over the course of the following few weeks, Kayla’s attempts to keep Duke within her fragile bamboo fence failed, and her social and professional life started to suffer as a result of Duke’s antics. During a garage sale one day, Duke burst through the fence, causing mayhem and resulting in Kayla’s pocketbook being stolen. While the neighborhood laughed at the incident, Kayla was left to deal with the fallout.
Kayla was desperate to keep Duke under control, but she tried a lot of things without success. She urged me once more to replace the fence one evening, even promising to cover the cost. I understood her situation, but I didn’t waver in my judgment. While we considered other options, rebuilding the fence was out of the question.
Kayla’s condition grew worse over the months, and her constant whining exhausted me. I ultimately made the decision to sell my home and move on. Kayla’s issue didn’t affect the young couple who bought my house; they were pet-free. I moved the old fence panels to my new house, where I met a particular someone and was able to find serenity.
In retrospect, I see that Kayla moving in next door gave me the motivation I needed to get out of the old area. There was peace when I moved into my new house, and I grin every time I think back to those fence panels. Telling the story to friends usually makes them chuckle and serves as a gentle reminder that karma can operate in surprising ways.
