In addition to the flag and their warriors, Americans have a great deal of regard for the national anthem. Before 1931, The Star Spangled Banner served as the national anthem of the United States. For those of you who are unfamiliar with its words, they are taken from Francis Scott Key’s amateur poem The Defence of Fort McHenry, which was penned in September 1814.
During the Battle of Baltimore, Key saw British Royal Navy ships pound Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. This incident, along with the stunning American flag, served as the inspiration for the lines that every patriotic American knows by heart.
Before every big event, including sporting ones, the national anthem is played.
